Historic McLaren M8e Goes Full-stick at WTAC 2022

The McLaren M8e, also affectionately known as ‘Matey’, will be at WTAC 2022 cutting laps with Porsche Carrera Cup race winner Harri Jones at the wheel!

Like the Kaditcha/Romano Sports Car that we have previously announced, this too is a product of the car design genius of Barry Lock. Barry is responsible for other notable WTAC entries such as the Hammerhead S13, Rob Nguyen’s Mighty Mouse CRX and most recently, Charles Warland’s Dream Project S15. Both ‘Matey’ and the Kaditcha will be doing flat-out demo laps.

The Can-Am (Canadian-American Challenge Cup) series produced some of the fastest race cars in the world between the late 60’s and early 80’s. There were only two rules that needed to be followed when building a car: 1. The cars had to have the wheels covered and 2. There had to be a passenger seat. Everything else was basically fair game, and in its day, the McLaren M8 was one of the most dominant in the series.

Debuting for the 1971 Can-Am season, the McLaren M8e was built at a time where there were extraordinary developments in motorsport! Materials such as titanium, the concept of ‘ground effects’, and much more groundbreaking technology was rife. ‘Matey’ is no exception, putting out around 750hp and only weighing 750kg, the power to weight ratio is 1:1!

The M8e is presented in original specification, as it was raced in the 1971 Can-Am season by Vic Elford. The glorious yellow paint is synonymous with many classic McLarens. Victor Henry Elford was an English sports car racing, rallying, and Formula One driver. He participated in 13 World Championship F1 Grands Prix, debuting on 7 July 1968. He scored a total of 8 championship points. He recently passed away on 13 March 2022, but part of his legacy lives on with this car which still bears his #29 race number.

The McLaren M8e will be on track at #WTAC2022 both Friday and Saturday, being driven full-stick with Harri Jones at the wheel. Don’t miss out!
