International Drifting Cup moves to SMSP South Circuit for 2019

International Drifting Cup moves to SMSP South Circuit in 2019

After a successful inaugural International Drifting Cup in 2018, we listened to fans and drivers and overwhelming feedback from both camps was the desire for a new track layout. To make the most of the amazing layout of Sydney Motorsport Park, the 2019 competition will now be run on SMSP South Circuit!

“The 2018 International Drift Cup was a huge success for the drivers and more importantly, for the fans, who got to see plenty of their favourite drivers battling multiple times over both days of competition. I’ll be honest, the weather took away the opportunity for this format to reach its full potential although the high caliber of the competitors still saw huge amounts of door on door action,” says WTAC Drift Operations Manager, Dan Mackie, “As there is always room for improvement, we’ll tune it up a little more and send it again this October!”

“The move to [SMSP] South Circuit was a no-brainer. Competitors enjoy the fast flowing layout and it gives drivers of all levels an opportunity to show their aggression in the chase. On top of that, it will bring the crowd closer to the action to see the skills of some of the worlds best drivers on display,” says Mackie.

World Time Attack Challenge CEO, Ian Baker, agrees that the return to SMSP South Circuit is in the best interest of all racers and race fans alike.

“It really will be fantastic to be back on the South Circuit after so many years. This is a really technical track that many regard as one of the best drift circuits in the world” says Ian.

“The last time we ran here was with Formula Drift Asia in 2014 and the vote was unanimous with both fans and drivers alike to return the International Drifting Cup here in 2019. We believe the line-up for 2019 will be one of the most competitive ever! With several current champions from around the world already confirming entry, this is one event not to be missed!”

The Cup format remains with drivers placed in randomly-drawn pools to battle it out and progress through to the final rounds. Learn more about the International Drifting Cup competition format here.
