When you have spent the last 15 years specialising in 300ZX performance  it would be fair to assume you would have the ability to make one go very fast and that is certainly the case with the Unique Autosports 300ZX. This car has been in a constant state of development for several years with UAS using it not only as a time attack race car but also as a development and test bed for Nissan racing products they manufacture and sell worldwide from their base in Seven Hills, Sydney Australia.

This car first appeared at the very first Superlap at Oran park  in 2008 in the hands of  “Mr Time Attack”John Boston and a revised version was back again in 2009 once again with Mr Boston doing the driving before the decision was made to take it to the “next level” and the car was stripped to a bare shell to turn it into the weapon you see in front of you.

Firstly anything that was not needed was removed and if it was required it was remade out of carbon fibre in a concentrated effort to get the weight down under the 1200kg mark. The big heavy VG30 was also removed and replaced with a much more modern and lighter aluminium block VQ30 engine which was then dry sumped and sat much lower in the chassis.

The engine bay really is a work of art with a pair of big GCG Garret turbos rear mounted on 6 boost manifolds with a pair of Turbosmart Comp-Gates. A custom Ross crank trigger system fires the engine and a Daley engineering 4 stage dry sump pump keeps the oil up to it and a set of UAS custom alloy inlet manifolds endure there is no inlet restriction with the power on moderate boost levels easily exceeding 500 horsepower at the wheels with the likelihood of much more being realised by the time August comes around.

The engine wasn’t the only place to receive a lot of attention either with the aero also coming under the microscope and the Unique Autosports team were fortunate enough to have engineering student from UTS Sydney – Nik Danielson doing some work experience with them and he was able to perform some CFD analysis work on the car for them using a program called Solidworks. Check out the samples of this program in action. Sample 1, Sample 2, Sample 3.

The car uses a PPG straight cut dog box and many parts that have been refurbished from top level race cars including the older style V8 Supercar AP racing callipers that can be bought for reasonable money overhauled and provide a very cost effective alternative.

Much of the suspension is handmade in house by the UAS crew to suit the application and a set of top level Bilstein coil over’s round out a well sorted potent package. The 300ZX still has a loyal following worldwide and the Unique Autosports team will certainly  be flying the 300ZX flag high for the fans in August in what is certainly Australia’s and probably the world’s fastest time attack 300ZX!.
